It derives from the oriental nocturnal gardens: places of meditation in China and worship in India where the garden was specially designed to enjoy its flowering in the evening.
It favors plants that bloom at night, those with white or pale corollas in general and with silver foliage. All of them stand out precisely when darkness falls, for the flowers that are finally open and for the reflections of the corollas or foliage in the moonlight.
